The Hillside real estate area is a section within Anchorage known for its incredible views, particularly during the winter sunrises and sunsets. Residents enjoy viewing wildlife in their own yards, including moose, deer, elk and many different smaller animals and birds. Most enjoy the fact that they feel like they are outside the city yet they have easy access to all the city has to offer, including shops, restaurants and attractions. The area has a quiet and quaint feel, with several exceptional bed-and-breakfasts, like Highland Glen Lodge, All the Comforts of Home, and Country Rose Manor. Locals are known to frequent nearby coffee shops to gather to talk about recent animal sightings, news in the city and more.

The area began growing after World War II when many military personnel decided to stay after being stationed in Anchorage. Residents include single men and women, young families and senior residents, all of whom enjoy their serene and peaceful surroundings.

Shopping and Dining

The downtown Anchorage shopping and dining district is a short 10-mile drive from most Hilltop real estate. Big box stores in the city include everything from Fred Meyer to Home Depot. Local coffee shops and Starbucks and are available in most shopping areas, as are specialty stores like About Face, which is a lifestyle boutique offering fine lingerie and skin care products. Bella Boutique also offers handbags, hats and jewelry.

There are few local upscale restaurants, fast food joints and coffee shops located within close proximity of Hillside real estate for residents and visitors to enjoy. Tia's Gourmet Sausage offers take-out specialties like reindeer sausage with onions and other lunch foods. O'Malley's On The Green snack shop is located within the Anchorage Golf Course and offers a bar and grill with appetizers, salads, chili and burgers. The main restaurant offers fine dining and an attractive, upscale setting. The facility is also available for weddings and other special events.

Parks and Recreation

Most Hillside real estate is very close to Chagach trailheads, which offer spectacular hiking, biking and snowshoeing opportunities. Bird and animal watchers will enjoy the pristine settings and quietness of the area. The Anchorage Golf Course is nearby and is recognized as one of the Best Courses You Can Play by Golf Week magazine, the No. 2 Best in Alaska for 2011 by Golf Digest, and the 2011 Top 100 Performer by Play Golf America. The Alaska Zoo is close as well, and it offers both indoor and outdoor animal exhibits for both residents and visitors to the area. Skiers can enjoy the Hilltop Ski Area, which is a training site for the Big Alaska Ski and Snowboard program and often opens in early November.

Living

Hillside is often warmer than in Anchorage proper because it is up on the hill and out of the inversion that can take place in the bowl. Residents often enjoy cleaner, fresher air and views that other Anchorage residents do not have. The climate during spring, summer and fall months is similar to the climate in San Francisco in the spring. Winter temperatures average about 15 to 20 degrees.

The area also boasts safe neighborhoods and great schools. Hilltop residents are often well educated and interested in outdoor recreation and quiet, peaceful living. The average cost of Hilltop real estate is $267,000. Homes in the area include smaller cabins, larger family homes and even homes situated on multiple acres. Because of the abundance of open space, the area feels less crowded and more secluded than other Anchorage properties. Most residents commute into Anchorage proper for work, while others are employed at local businesses including the ski area, golf course or places like Hilltop Recycling.

Schools, Health, Transportation

Children have the option of attending either public or private schools in Anchorage, and the commute by bus is relatively short to most schools. Trailside Elementary School and South Anchorage High School serve children and teens in the Hilltop areas. Private schools include Grace Christian School and Anchor Lutheran School.

Hospitals in the area include the large Providence Alaska Medical Center, while health clinics include the Ravenwood Family Clinic, Patients First Medical Clinic and others. The Municipality of Anchorage bus system serves most residents with Hilltop real estate as well as those in surrounding areas. The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is just 15 minutes from most Hilltop real estate.
